Nigel Hawes, a Partner at exigere

Exigere partner Nigel Hawes leads our Health, Science and Education team. Nigel’s vast experience spans the delivery of world-class medical facilities at the cutting-edge and developments for organisations at forefront of clinical research.

He has helped shape state-of-the-art education facilities that will provide the next generation with libraries, creative arts spaces, sporting facilities and high-quality accommodation.

Nigel joined exigere in 2016. Below is a collection of his previous work completed at Turner & Townsend.

Maurice Wohl Clinical Neuroscience Institute, London

Infrastructure and landscaping for one of Europe’s largest centres for interdisciplinary neuroscience.

Works at King’s College London’s 100,000ft² research facility introduced site-wide infrastructure and public realm solutions, including dedicated CHP for the Denmark Hill Campus.

Hard and soft landscaping were provided across the site, which houses flexible, sustainable research laboratories for stroke and head injuries, neurogenetics, epilepsy and neurodegeneration.

Waterside Campus, Northampton

Development of a brownfield site for a new University of Northampton campus.

The build included 450,000ft² of highly flexible teaching spaces including workshops, library, study and performance spaces, and 1,000 student beds in townhouses and apartment buildings.

A new, modern sports lodge with an artificial turf pitch provides for indoor and outdoor activities.

Remediation and extensive public and private highway works included pedestrian/vehicle bridges. Utilities infrastructure such as CHP and District Heating systems completed the works.

Townhouse, Kingston

Replacing an outdated, temporary building is a new 110,000ft² landmark teaching facility of high-quality design, offering a vibrant new face to Kingston University and a warm welcome to Kingston upon Thames.

The new building is equipped with a learning resource centre with a mix of formal and informal teaching spaces, as well as a new home for the performing arts with an auditorium and cafes.

The project also contributed site-wide public realm works.

UCA Masterplan, Multiple Locations

Development of a 10 year strategic masterplan across four campuses (Canterbury, Epson, Farnham and Rochester), exploring new build and refurbishment opportunities.

Potential uses covered teaching spaces and libraries, laboratories and improved access and links throughout the site.

The project produced a framework for a capital investment plan aimed at retaining the university’s position as one of the country’s premium creative education institutes.

Teaching Block Extension, Rochester

Refurbishment and construction of a two-storey extension for UCA’s Rochester campus.

Works introduced a series of new amenities including a new lecture theatre, an enlarged library, gallery, project spaces and student-facing services.

Re-positions to the floor plan provided a new entrance location for the campus.

Learning and Teaching Refurbishment Programme

Commercial management of a summer refurbishment programme of Kings College London’s learning and teaching spaces.

Refurbishments to libraries, lecture theatres, seminar rooms, social spaces and laboratories were successfully completed to a tight deadline.

Workshop Studios, Epsom

The first project generated from UCA’s 10 year masterplan development, extensions to existing arts studios created new highly versatile spaces suitable for a variety of creative arts courses.

Off-site manufacture of the building was used, reducing on-site time and enabling efficient construction during summer break.
